functioning Malignant Paraganglioma Arising from the Organ of Zuckerkandl
Seo Kyung-Ho

Abstract
Paraganglioma of the organ of Zuckerkandl is a rare retroperitonical tumor that arises from the para-aortic paraganglia around the origin of the inferior mesenteric artery.
Paragangliomas are usually recognized by the effects of overproduction of catecholamines. Although an accurate preoperative clinical diagnosis of the retroperitoneal tumor may be difficult, it is important to establish a functional status, location and extent of the tumor in addition to outlining nutrient vessels in order to avoid uncontrollable hemorrhage and to prevent the potentially lethal sequelae attending release of catecholamine during anesthetic induction or surgical manipulation. Because of relatively indolent growth characteristics and no reliable histopathologic features distin-
guishing malignant paragnaglioma, complete surgical resection and long term follow up are required. We present a case of malignant paraganglioma arising from the organ of Zuckerkandl. The patient was a 50-year-old woman with the complaint of palpable mass on the lower abdomen. The mass measuring 8 x 7 x 6.5cm and weighing 500gm, was completely resected by means of transperitoneal approach and proved to be a malignant, paragangliomal.
